About Hushu House
In December 2024, Hushu House opened its doors in Amsterdam Southeast. This information and support centre provides assistance to people without a valid residence permit. Hushu House is a collaboration between the Municipality of Amsterdam, NGOs, and grassroots organisations, with the Dutch Red Cross acting in a coordinating role.
What will you do?
Your shift starts with a brief meeting with the day coordinator to discuss the latest updates and any important developments. After that, your focus will be on making visitors feel welcome and at home.
Your responsibilities may include:
Welcoming and registering visitors (both on paper and digitally)
Offering coffee, tea, or a toasted sandwich
Assisting with laundry, showers, clothing, and other practical needs
Creating a warm and safe atmosphere by having conversations, playing games, or simply offering a listening ear
Referring visitors to consultation hours and activities
Helping to keep the space clean and tidy
You will volunteer for at least one shift (4 hours) every two weeks, from Monday to Friday. We ask that you are available for a minimum commitment of one year.
Who are you?
You are culturally sensitive and comfortable taking initiative.
You are committed to helping everyone, regardless of religion, background, or beliefs.
You can remain calm, even in challenging situations.
You have a good command of English. Do you also speak Arabic, Farsi, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Twi, or Tigrinya? That’s a great advantage!
What do we ask of you?
You will need a Certificate of Conduct (VOG). To obtain this, you must be registered in the Netherlands and have a Citizen Service Number (BSN). The Dutch Red Cross will arrange and pay for the application.
You will complete four e-learning modules and participate in four training sessions (4 hours per session), with a total time commitment of approximately 20 hours.
You work in accordance with the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
What do we offer?
A diverse and committed volunteer team where everyone matters.
Opportunities for personal growth and development, helping you make the most of your talents.
Social gatherings and team dinners to get to know your fellow volunteers.
Reimbursement of travel expenses and comprehensive insurance coverage while carrying out your volunteer activities.
