Would you like to make a difference at short notice when it really matters? Join our WKR volunteer pool!

really matters? Join our WKR volunteer pool!
For the Winter Cold Weather Scheme (WKR), which provides shelter for homeless people, we are looking for flexible volunteers who can help whenever the scheme is activated during the period from 15 November 2026 to 1 April 2027.
We are looking for help in the mornings and evenings.
Morning shift (08:00–12:00)
During the morning shift, you will support Salvation Army staff with various tasks. These may include:
• Waking participants during the morning rounds at 08:00 and 08:30.
• Preparing and serving breakfast.
• Receiving and registering returned luggage.
• Tidying and cleaning the dining room and sleeping areas.
• Changing bed linen.
At the end of the morning, you will attend a team meeting to discuss any notable events or issues from the shift.
Evening shift (16:00–20:00)
There are also various tasks you can help with during the evening, such as:
• Welcoming and registering participants.
• Receiving and labelling luggage.
• Preparing and serving dinner.
• Keeping the dining room clean and tidy.
There is also room for personal interaction with participants, for example, having a conversation or sharing a cup of coffee.
At the end of the evening, you will help wrap up the shift and hand over to the day coordinator.
Your contribution makes a direct impact: you help provide people with a safe, warm place to stay when they need it most.
Speaking languages other than Dutch, such as English, Slavic languages, German, French, Spanish and/or Italian, is an advantage but certainly not a requirement.
Are you available, at least occasionally, on an on-call basis between 15 November 2026 and 1 April 2027? Then apply now!
This is who you are
• You are flexible and able to respond quickly when called upon.
• You are confident and able to stand your ground.
• You can remain calm when things become busy or chaotic.
• You work well with others.
• You have an affinity with the target group.
• You have a sufficient command of both Dutch and English.
• You respect the mission and objectives of the Salvation Army’s Social Welfare and Healthcare Foundation.
What we offer
• Appreciation, a friendly atmosphere and guidance.
• A positive working environment.
• Personal liability insurance (WA insurance).
• The opportunity to be part of a community committed to helping vulnerable people.
About the Salvation Army
The Salvation Army supports the most vulnerable people in society — those who have no one to turn to for help.
Motivated by Christian values, we provide assistance to vulnerable men, women and children who need support in areas such as physical and mental health, (supported) housing, finances, employment and parenting.
Every year, more than 6,000 professionals and 12,000 volunteers from the Salvation Army support approximately 75,000 people.

Our team
The Winter Cold Weather Scheme (WKR) is an emergency measure that is activated as needed between 15 November 2026 and 1 April 2027. Whenever the feels-like temperature drops below freezing or extreme winter weather occurs, this additional evening and overnight shelter service is activated immediately.
During the WKR, the usual admission requirements are suspended. The shelter is free of charge and open to all homeless people in Amsterdam who cannot find alternative accommodation themselves.
This is a crucial additional measure alongside the city’s regular overnight shelter services.
The service at our location on Van Ostadestraat is a joint initiative between the Salvation Army and the Municipality of Amsterdam. Its goal is to ensure that everyone has a safe, warm place to stay during periods of extreme cold.
