HackYourFuture is a non-profit providing a coding bootcamp to people with a refugee background Our trainees need English language conversational support as well as coding skills which is where you come in!

Our volunteer English Mentors can help us to ensure that each trainee becomes a valuable employee in the ICT world. Since our foundation in 2016, more than 330 trainees have graduated, more than 250 are employed as IT professionals and 90% of graduates have found work.

Some trainees need additional language support at the end of their coding course to improve their conversation and interviewing skills. We just need you to offer conversation practice, so a great command of the English language is required. After you have been introduced to your trainee, you will contact the trainee, agree upon a time and day and start mentoring them. We suggest 1 hour a week for a period of 12 weeks (flexible, based on your and your trainee’s availability). Even if you have only half an hour per week, this is still invaluable support for our trainees. See here for an overview of what you will do and our contact and support roadmap.

We offer support and guidance including ideas for discussions with your mentee, and we have an optional bi-weekly meeting with fellow English mentors and the HackYourFuture team to gather feedback and ask questions. The number of weeks for which the trainee needs English support varies per trainee, and additionally how quickly they find an internship, but generally they are back on track after a month or so, with a maximum of 12 weeks’ support.
