Multilingual Host/hostess and Guide

An open person who wants to tell the story of our worldwide collection in a lively and appealing way to our international visitors, in more than two languages!

1. Tasks: As a host/hostess and guide you will receive visitors and provide information about the history of the canal house and the unique collection on display. You represent the museum. Visitors will get their ticket at the counter. You are their guide and give explanation about the house and collection. Surveillance on safety is part of your job.
You’ll learn a number of specialist terms in the field of pipes and tobacco in various languages, in order to be able to well inform the international visitors. We hope you’ll take the challenge of sharing the story of our collection with the audience in the most appealing way. You get all our help to get so far during an internal training.
We would appreciate if you could assist the museum, during the low times, in other tasks, like social media or translating our website. This would make you a first choice volunteer!

2. Required skills: We are looking for persons with a friendly and hospitable mind, who like to make our visitors at home, giving them oral information up to their level of interest. You are neat in appearance, without being formal. You like to talk to people and inform them about our museum and its extraordinary collection. You will receive thorough training prior to your first shift so that you will be well-informed. Upon completing your training you will enjoy sharing your knowledge with the public. The collection comprises fashion, craftmanship and traditions from dozens of different countries. We appreciate a basic knowledge of Dutch. However, English is a must because of our mostly foreign visitors. Fluency in any other languages, will definitely enhance our hospitality, so that is a plus.
Take a look at our Tripadvisor page to see why visitors give us a high rating. Take it as your personal challenge to strive for this high level.

On top of that, we will offer you a nice and informal working atmosphere with relaxed tea breaks. After a while you will have the liberty to make the tour in your personal way.
The museum offers a beautiful working environment, a 17-th Century canal house to take pride in as a resident of Amsterdam. Visitors are, without exception, surprised and astonished by the monumental canal house and the beauty of its interior. Each visitor leaves the museum with a happy smile on their face and this is part of your work! Furthermore, there is a friendly and informal atmosphere among the colleagues.
